Benefits of a Simple Act
Last summer we had some dead trees removed from around the edge of the pond. After the men left, we noticed that one branch had fallen into the pond and was partially submerged, but still close to shore being anchored in the reeds. We were planning to remove it when our neighbor suggested that we leave it so the smallest fishes and other aquatic life would have protective hiding places.
We thought that was a clever idea, so we left it there.
Because our pond is the perfect habitat for turtles, we have long suspected that one was living there. We spotted one years ago but haven’t since.
Until last week.
Whatever that branch has become under water, we can’t really tell. But above the water, it has become a favorite place for turtles (there are at least 4), ducks, geese, and birds of all kinds. I was excited to see two of my favorite shore birds: a great blue heron and a snowy egret take a turn and rest a bit on our branch. A protected, safe, and peaceful place.
We left it there for the wildlife, but I have found so much unexpected joy in watching them. A simple act of providing that has increased in benefits.
We do that as friends and strangers when we offer even the simplest of help or a kind word.
It might not appear to be much at face value, but kindness has a way of multiplying.
